The No. 38 University of Louisville men's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine matches by defeating Wisconsin Green Bay 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards (11-2) will face IUPUI at 5 p.m. to wrap up the weekend doubleheader.
"Green Bay is a really, really good team," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are one of those dangerous teams around the country that could knock off a ranked school anytime. They are playing very well, upsetting DePaul and Marquette right before our match and I knew it was going to be a tough match... So I am really happy and it is just a testament of how hard the guys are working, how well they listen, how mature they are during the season and how deep this team is."
Louisville clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. The No. 2 pair of Albert Wagner and Pally Ray started the day by sweeping Michael Tebon and Joey Leto 6-0. Van Damrongsri and Luis Elizondo fell 6-3 to Leopold Gomez Islinger and Florian Kraenzler in No. 3 doubles, but moments later the No. 1 pair of Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown defeated Michael Tenzer and Howard Scott 6-2 to clinch the point for the Cards.
In singles play, Wagner made the score 2-0 when he took down Tenzer 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot. Brown added the lead for the Cards when he defeated Leto 6-4, 6-3 in No. 6 singles before the Phoenix got on the board in No. 3 singles when Michael Lippens fell 6-3, 6-4 to Scott. Damrongsri rounded out the scoring for Louisville in the No. 4 spot with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kraenzler to clinch the point and the match.
With the win, head coach Rex Ecarma now has 396 victories and needs just four more to reach 400.
