Volleyball Falls to ASU

The Cardinals, 3-2, were outhit .230 to .293 but outblocked the Mountaineers 6-4. Janelle Jenkins hit .429 with eight kills on 14 swings. ASU was led by tournament MVP Emily Corrigan's 13 kills with Lauren Gray adding 12 with .500 hitting. Gray and setter Paige Brown were also named to the All-Active Ankle Challenge team. For Louisville, Katie George and Maya McClendon joined them on the All-Tournament team. Emma Roberson of Cincinnati and Naomi Wells of Tennessee State rounded out the field.
"Hats off to Appalachian State, they came in with a lot of energy and challenged us at every turn. At the end of the day, we played not to lose and they had nothing to lose," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "They had success at the serving line and we made it easy on them at times. We were coming off a successful week and I thought we played tight here at home all weekend. We need to learn to maintain our composure and take away a lesson from that situation. We have two ranked opponents this week coming up against Kentucky and Arizona State so that lesson came at a good time in our season."
The Cards got off to a sluggish start, falling back 11-5 early in the first set. Kordes burned her last timeout trailing 18-15 but her team could get no closer and fell 25-19. ASU hit a torrid .469 with two aces. Maya McClendon had a team-high six kills in the first set to pace Louisville.
UofL regrouped and ASU hitting cooled as the second set saw the Cards lead the whole way. After falling back 10-6, ASU called time out but could not gain ground on the Cards, who were hitting .276. UofL transfer Tara Gowan came off the bench and sparked the team with two blocks and a kill as the Cards won 25-19.
The Mountaineers regrained momentum in the third set, blasting out to a 5-0 lead to put the Cards back on their heels. UofL rallied to come within two at 10-8 before ASU rewidened the margin to 20-12. After ASU got to set point at 24-17, Louisville reeled off four straight before a kill by tournament MVP Emily Corrigan gave the Mountaineers the 25-21 win.
In the final set, UofL shot out to a 9-4 lead but ASU answered with five straight to tie at 8. The two teams traded points in a set that had 13 ties before ASU gained some breathing room with two straight Cardinal errors and an ace by Olivia Loeffler for the 25-21 win.
UofL plays archrival Kentucky at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the KFC Yum! Center before heading to Morehead State to face the Eagles as well as Arizona State and Northern Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
