Cardinal Janelle Jenkins added seven kills. Juniors Roxanne McVey led the Cardinals with 11 digs, and Katie George totaled 26 assists. UofL ended with eight total team blockswith Jenkins adding three , while TSU tallied only two.
"That was a great win and I am happy with our effort level," said Head Coach Anne Kordes, "TSU is an athletic team that plays a fast-paced offense. We hadn't seen an offense like that, and it was good to see us make a successful adjustment."
The Cardinals came out strong in the first set, getting off to a quick 5-0 lead. The Tigers best chance to take the lead was when they clawed back early in the set to make it 6-5. UofL never gave up the lead and pulled away after that, ending the set on a 7-0 run, to win 25-11. The Cards hit .520 in the first set.
In the second set, Louisville got off to another quick start to go up 6-1 early. Tennessee State made it 6-3, and could get no closer. The Cards went on a five-point run in the middle of the set to boost the lead to 15-5, and went on to win easily by a score of 25-13. UofL hit .480 for the second set, while holding TSU to -.029 hitting.
The Tigers came out of the break with momentum as they took an early 5-1 lead. The Cards came close, but did not take the lead until mid-way through the set at 13-12. The set went back and forth between the teams, tied as late as 19-19, until UofL broke free to win the set and the match, 25-20. There were eight ties and three lead changes in the third set. Tennessee State held Louisville to a .167 hitting percentage, but were held to .024 in that set.
"I feel like TSU will have a good run in the OVC, and this will be a good RPI match for us," Kordes said.
The Cards are back in action this evening in the nightcap versus former conference rival, Cincinnati, at 7:30 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
