George finished with 37 assists and 16 digs while McClendon tallied 11 kills and 12 digs. Janelle Jenkins added 10 kills. Louisville totaled four aces and hit .252 for the match compared to .134 for Cincinnati.
"I thought we did great overall from the service line," said Head Coach Anne Kordes. "UC is much improved from last season and should do great in the AAC. This is just a wonderful rivalry."
It was a tightly contested opening set as neither team could pull away and they battled through 16 ties and eight lead changes. With the score tied 19-19, Louisville finally put together a 6-0 run behind three kills and a pair of blocks to close it out 25-19. Louisville hit .312 to Cincinnati's .079.
The second set was much of the same early on until the Cardinals built a 14-9 lead. The Bearcats hung around but never took the lead, and an ace by Maggie DeJong gave UofL their largest lead of the set at 20-14. The Cards used another late rally to close it out, this time a 5-0 run to win 25-16 on a Cincinnati attack error. Tess Clark had six kills in the second to lead the Cardinals.
The seesaw battle continued in the third set until Cincinnati used a 4-0 run, their largest of the match, to build a 15-12 lead. UofL rallied back with a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 16-15. The Bearcats held a 20-19 advantage before a 3-0 run by the Cards gave Louisville a 22-20 lead. A kill by Laura Blab gave the Cards the 25-22 win and the sweep.
"I thought Janelle Jenkins did a great job of lighting up in the third set. They had to go away from Maya, who also did a great job from the service line," Kordes said.
The Cardinals close out the weekend versus Appalachian State at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Cardinal Arena.
