"Janelle Jenkins had a phenomenal match with 14 kills along with Maya. It was great to see them get a ton of swings and take care of the ball," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "I was excited and impressed with the play of Tara Gowan off the bench. She had limited touches but she showed me signs of being a formidable blocker."
UofL, 7-4, hit .274 and outblocked the Owls 10-4 led by Tess Clark's five. Jenkins had a double-double, adding 10 digs to her 14 kills. Maya McClendon had 14 kills and five blocks. The Owls, 9-4, were led by Leah Mikesky's eight kills.
The first set was tightly contested until Lyndsay Palmer served five straight points to put the Cards up 23-17 and UofL hitting of .364 was too much to overcome as the Cards won 25-19. Maya McClendon had five kills in the set.
In the second set, UofL hitting chilled to .208 but up went the Cardinal block led by Tess Clark's three. Louisville called time out when the Owls got to within one at 20-19 but a kill by Clark and Jenkins gave UofL the 25-22 win and a 2-0 set lead going into the break.
Cards went up 12-0 in the third set and seemed to have things in hand. However, Rice had other ideas and answered with rallies of a four and five straight points. UofL had match point at 24-16 but the Owls scored three times before a Maya McClendon gave the set to Louisville 25-19.
The Cardinals play Texas Southern in the final match up in the Rice Invitational tomorrow at 11:30 ET.
