Williams Earns All-America Honors at NCAA Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Louisville track and field's Ben Williams became the school's second indoor All-American in the triple jump, finishing in the top five of the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships late Saturday night in Albuquerque, N.M.
“Ben did a great job tonight in the triple jump,” head coach Dale Cowper said. “He had a couple of big fouls that would have put him into the runner-up position, but we are very happy with his finish.”
Williams, who recorded his personal-best jump of 16.22m/53-2.75 on his second attempt, registered a fourth-place finish to earn USTFCCCA first team All-America honors. The sophomore passed on his third attempt and then fouled each of his three jumps in the final round.
The New Castle, United Kingdom, native is the first to achieve indoor All-America honors in the event since Andre Black finished ninth in the triple jump at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Williams' mark is the second-best leap in school history, only behind Black's national championship winning jump of 16.29m/53-5.50 in 2007.
By placing fourth, Louisville finished tied for 40th in the men's team standings with five points.
Williams also has put together one of the top seasons in school history in the jumps group. He won the league's triple jump title two weeks ago, becoming the first champion in the event since Black won the BIG EAST's triple jump title in 2009.
“Coach Walker Jr. has done a tremendous job developing both Ben and Guillaume throughout the indoor season,” Cowper said, “and we look forward to building on the momentum our program is gaining this spring.”
Williams was seeded sixth nationally in the triple jump after achieving a previous season-best mark of 16.16m/53-0.25 to earn the AAC's crown.
