Maya McClendon's 17 kills and four blocks were not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 3-1 to ACC foe Virginia Saturday evening in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers, 10-7, 3-1, hit .286 with 10 blocks and five aces for the 25-23, 11-25, 25-18 25-22 win .The Cardinals hit .246 with seven aces and and 11 blocks and evened their conference mark at two and moved to 10-6 overall.
"Virginia is a good team but we have to focus on us because our passing is limiting our offensive options," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. " They played good defense and these matches come down to serve and pass and that is what it comes down to win or lose. We will just have to come back quick because we have two big matches next weekend that we are excited about in Florida State and Notre Dame."
Janelle Jenkins had ten kills and two blocks with setter Katie George posting 39 assists and five aces. The Cavs were led by Jasmin Burton's 17 kills and three blocks.
The two teams sprinted out of the gate in the first set, with 16 ties and five lead changes. Neither team ever had more than a three point lead. Virginia's .425 hitting tipped the first set to the Cavs as UofL struggled to contain lefty right side hitter Jasmine Burton, who had 7 kills. UofL hit .243 but had three aces in the 25-22 loss.
Katie George had four aces during a 14-0 run in the second set as UofL won 25-11 to even the set score before the break. UofL hit .611 in the set and had three blocks.
In the third set, UVa popped out to a 6-2 lead but the Cards closed the gap to pull within one at 9-8. The Cavs knitted together a 6-1 run to go up 15-9 and UofL could not catch them. Battling to within three at 21-18, the Cards could not stop Burton who scored three of the last four points of the set for the 25-18 UVa win.
Tied at nine, UVa went on a 4-0 run early in the fourth set to go up 13-10. The teams traded points but after UofL scored two straight UVa called timeout with an 18-16 lead. Virginia hit .405 in the set to Louisville's .290 and the differential took its toll as the Cards fell 25-22.
The Cards return to the Ville to host No. 5 ranked Florida State on Friday at 7 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
