Tess Clark had 17 kills and six blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-2 win over NC State in ACC volleyball action in Raleigh Sunday afternoon.
"I don't always like the circumstances that led us to a fifth set, but I love the way we compete in a fifth set," said UofL coach Anne Kordes. "Getting two road wins in the ACC was a first for us. All credit to the Wolfpack, who did not make it easy for us at all.
The Cards, who are now 3-2 in five setters, hit .282 with six aces and a season high 13 blocks in the 18-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14, 15-9 win. UofL raises its record to 13-7 and is 5-3 in the league. NC State hit .224 with three aces and six blocks. Maya McClendon had 11 kills with an ace. Janelle Jenkins had 13 kills with an ace and five blocks. NC State was led by Kaitlynn Kearney's 15 kills.
"I need to credit Tess Clark this whole weekend. She put us on her back and carried us offensively. Maggie DeJong deserves credit on defense in the fourth and fifth as her blocking had their hitters flustered."
In the first set, NC State popped out to a 7-2 lead but Lyndsay Palmer serving five straight points tied the set at nine and forced a Wolfpack timeout. The Cards stayed close but the Pack went on a 7-1 run after UofL tied at 15 to take a 22-16 lead. Kordes burned both her timeouts but NCSU pushed to the 25-18 win.
UofL had a 4-0 run to go up 12-7 and the Wolfpack had to battle Cardinal hitting of .591 to try to get back in the set. Out of timeouts and down 21-12, NCSU did manage a 4-0 run but the Cards reeled off the final four points for the 25-16 run.
In the third set, UofL stayed close with a Maggie DeJong slide dropping for a kill at 16-14 before the Wolfpack put together a 4-1 run to go up 20-15. Two consecutive kills by Tess Clark and a Wolfpack miscue sparked a NCSU timeout at 20-18. The Pack had four blocks in the set and stymied the Cardinal offense as NCSU surged to the 25-20 win in the set.
Lyndsay Palmer served seven straight points as the Cards took a 14-8 lead in the fourth set. The Wolfpack were not able to overcome .440 hitting by the Cardinals as UofL rolled to the 25-14 win to force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, UofL took a 5-2 lead but NC State scrambled back to tie at 9. After a Cardinal timeout, NC State did not score again as two Courtney Robison aces and a net call gave the set and match to Louisville 15-9.
