Brooke Mattingly had nine kills and an ace but it was not enough as the No. 17-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team fell 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 to Wisconsin in the final match of the Fargo Doublewood Inn Classic on the campus of North Dakota State.
"Inexperience played a role in the two losses today to two really good programs," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "This is why we play a challenging schedule -- to find out where we are. What I saw was easily fixable. That is what I like about this team, they are ready to work their tails off to come back and be able to control the match and not give points away."
U of L hit .087 as a team but senior transfer Randi Ewing was a bright spot with eight kills and a block, as was libero Caitlin Welch who had 15 digs and two aces and was named to the all-tournament team. UW was led by Courtney Thomas' 11 kills. UW improves to and U of L falls to 2-3 on the season.
The Badgers ran out to a 10-1 run, forcing Kordes to burn both timeouts early in the first set and eventually fell 25-15. The Cards were unable to put together any kind of run and were hampered by .051 hitting and Badger blocking.
U of L fell behind 9-4 early in the second set, but got to within one at 20-19 on an ace by Caitlin Welch. The Badgers buckled down and outscored U of L 5-2 down the stretch for the 25-21 win. U of L hitting increased to .192 in that set, but the block deficit stayed at 6-1.
In the third set, after trailing 7-2, U of L came back to tie at seven and stayed close until a UW 4-1 run gave the Badgers some breathing room and they staved off the Cardinal comeback attempt with the 25-20 win.
U of L heads to Lexington on Sept. 10 to face instate rival Kentucky at 7 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
