Brooke Mattingly had nine kills and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 win over Rice in the Active Ankle Challenge Presented by Marriott Downtown.
"I am really happy about the way we controlled the match," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "We have struggled with unforced errors and we did a great job of ball control today."
U of L, 3-6, hit a season high .337 with six aces and five blocks. Rice, 3-9, hit .178 and was led by Jillian Humphries 12 kills. The Cards also featured strong offense from Janelle Jenkins, who connected on eight kills with Maya McClendon adding seven kills with seven blocks.
"Brooke Mattingly was unstoppable offensively and our passing in the third game was exceptional," said Kordes. "The big difference in the match was our aggressive serving, it kept them out of system."
U of L used a 6-2 run to go up 16-12 in a tightly contested first set. The Owls cut the deficit to one at 23-22 before an attack error by Sara Blasier took the Cards to set point at 24-22. A kill by Lizzy Bache staved off the set point but another attack error by the Owls tipped the set to the Cards 25-23.
The Owls couldn't get off the ground in the second set as .481 hitting by the Cardinals kept them out of system. Down 18-10 after a 4-0 run by the Cards, Rice could not gain any footing with .167 hitting and fell 25-15.
In the third set, Rice stayed close early on before giving up an 8-1 run put the Cards up 17-10. The Owls managed to cut the lead trailing by just three at 20-17 on a Cardinal hitting error. UofL held tight and a kill by Janelle Jenkins was set and match point for the Cards.
The Cards are back in action Saturday evening at 7:30 versus Virginia Tech at Cardinal Arena.
