Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Minnesota

Emily Juhl had nine kills and Janelle Jenkins added eight more but their efforts were not enough as No. 4 Minnesota swept the University of Louisville volleyball team 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington Saturday night.
"I am proud of our passing game. I thought Caitlin Welch did a great job attempting to give us the chance to control the ball on serve receive," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "Emily Juhl was out there battling them on the pins but we never found an opportunity to pressure them for a sustained period of time."
The Cardinals, 2-5, hit .141 and were outblocked 10-3. U of L's Maya McClendon had six kills.
"After seeing Penn State and Minnesota this season there is no question they are two of the best teams in the country both physically and technically," said Kordes.
Minnesota remains undefeated, as the Gophers have not dropped a single set yet in all eight matches. UM was paced by Tori Dixon's 19 kills and seven blocks.
The Cardinals could not overcome .737 hitting in the first set as the No. 4-ranked Gophers took a solid lead early at 13-7 on three straight U of L errors and then continued to pull away as U of L did itself few favors with three service errors and .167 hitting. The Cards were paced by Emily Juhl's four kills in the 25-16 loss.
In the second set, Minnesota took a 16-7 lead early but U of L used a 5-1 lead later to stay within six at 21-15. UM called timeout when U of L scored two straight to make the score 23-17 but the Cards would only score once more as U of L fell 25-18.
In the third set, The Cards trailed by just two at 14-12 but were then outscored 11-3 down the stretch as the Gophers kicked it up a notch to finish off the Cards 25-15.
U of L plays Pepperdine Saturday at 5 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum as the Bluegrass Battle continues.
