RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team upset No. 24 VCU 4-2 Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (13-10) snapped VCU's five match win streak and handed the Rams their first home loss of the season.
"The team was excellent today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They played aggressive doubles and showed a higher level of chemistry overall. Basically, they came together and won for each other. Sebastian led the way with defeating a highly ranked player and Chris Simich did double duty successfully. A big shoutout to the `Thai Clincher' who sealed the victory. VCU is a solid team and I have great respect for coach Paul Kostin who is the winningest active coach in college tennis."
The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. VCU's Alexis Heugas and Dylan McCloskey defeated Alex Gornet and Albert Wagner 8-3 at the top seed. Jeffrey Brown and Chris Simich topped Alejandro Argente and Jaime Vazquez 8-4 at the three-spot while Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri teamed to beat Max Wennakoski and Michal Voscek 8-6 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, the Rams tied the match on court two where No. 74 Alexis Heugas defeated Louisville's Albert Wagner 6-1, 6-3. The Cardinals regained the lead at the three-spot where Simich beat Argente 6-2, 6-3. Stiefelmeyer, No. 76 in the ITA singles rankings, upset No. 23 Max Wennakoski 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 to increase the Cards' lead to 3-1. VCU pulled within a point at the No. 4 spot where Vazquez defeated Michael Lippens 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 The match was decided on court No. 6 where Damrongsri picked up a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Dylan McCloskey.
Louisville will face Memphis in a neutral match Saturday at 2 p.m.
