Emily Juhl had 21 kills, hitting .528 with two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 23-25, -25-10,25-17, 25-20 win over Rutgers in volleyball action Friday night in Piscataway, N.J.
Playing without defensive specialist and starter Haley Pouliezos, who was injured in warmups, the Cards still managed to outdig the Knights 70-44 and outblock them 7-6. Maya McClendon had her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs. Hannah Kvitle had three aces and three kills at setter. U of L moves to 13-7 and 8-0 in The American. Rutgers drops to 4-18 and 0-8 in the league.
"We need to respond to adversity a little quicker. I felt like we were sleep walking through the first set and then woke up," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "Maya was swinging very aggressively and helped us on defense with 13 digs. Our setters were very effective at the service line, allowing us to go on runs."
The Cards fell 25-23 in the first set and were plagued by unforced errors, with two service errors, a blocking error and getting aced twice. After leading 4-3, the Cards never led again with RU stringing together two five-point runs. The Scarlet Knights held U of L to .194 hitting and blocked them twice.
Katie George served for nine straight points to up the Cards up 20-8 in the second set. U of L got to set point and then a Maya McClendon kill evened the set score at one with the 25-10 win. The Cards hit .385 in the set and were led by Juhl's five kills. RU hit -.031 and were unblocked 4-1.
In the third set, Juhl served for five straight points to give U of L a 15-10 lead and Rutgers had no answer for Juhl's hitting either, with the senior connecting for five kills in the set.
A 9-0 run in in the fourth set took the Cards to a 13-6 lead but the Knights battled back to cut the lead to one at 20-19 but did not score again as U of L rolled 25-20 powered by two kills by Brooke Mattingly and a dump by Hannah Kvitle for set and match.
The Cards travel to Storrs, Conn. for an ESPNU match at 1 p.m. on Sunday as they face the Huskies of UConn.
