Volleyball Sweeps Seton Hall

Kaitlynn James had ten kills and no errors along with two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 sweep of BIG EAST Seton Hall in volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Arena.
"We were led by Kaitlynn and Caitlin in this match. Welch passed lights out tonight and James hit .417 which is crazy," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "It was good to see Gwen Rucker gain strength and energy after being off. She came in and really broke the third set open for us. I thought Carly Sahagian had a nice day too."
U of L moves to 15-2 and 4-1 in the league with the seventh sweep of the season. Seton Hall moves to 15-3 and 3-2 and was led by Stacey Manthorpe with 12 kills and 12 digs. The Cards hit .184 and had 10 blocks and five aces, led by Katie George's three. Emily Juhl had five blocks with Lola Arslanbekova adding 17 kills and eight digs. Caitlin Welch had a match-high 18 digs.
Although U of L was up early, Seton Hall used a 7-1 run to go up 10-8. U of L tied at ten, but SHU scored four straight on Cardinal errors to go up 14-10. The Cards responded with a seven point run of their own to go up 17-14 and spark a Pirate timeout. U of L built the lead to 23-19 on two blocks by Brooke Mattingly and a Arslanbekova kill and SHU burned its last timeout. Kaitlynn James had two consecutive kills to tip the match 25-23 for the Cards. Hitting was sketchy on both sides with the Cards hitting a chilly .104 to SHU's .047. U of L had three aces, all by Katie George, and four blocks. James paced the Cards with five kills.
In the second set, after trading points with the Pirates, U of L put together a 5-1 run to go up 18-13 before SHU called timeout. The Pirates answered with a 5-2 run but the Cards got to set point on two straight kills by Arslanbekova, who then tipped for the set point. She had eight kills in the set and James added five of her own. Both teams had three blocks. U of L hauled its hitting percentage up to .371 for the set to SHU's .250.
The Cards breezed out to a 9-2 lead in the third set and extended it to 16-7, powered by three kills and a block by Lola. Out of timeouts, Seton Hall managed a 5-1 run to pull within four at 19-15 and made it interesting with a 2-1 run to come within three at 23-20 but two kills by Carly Sahagian and another by Rucker gave the set and match to the Cards 25-20.
U of L returns to the KFC Yum! Center Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for a matchup with Rutgers and then faces No. 9-ranked Texas on Monday at 7 p.m. also at the KFC Yum! Center.
