Emily Juhl had a season-high 13 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 win over previously unbeaten conference leader Marquette in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
"Emily Juhl did a great job with her season high 13 kills. It was a huge match and a difficult challenge to come in to the No. 1 team in the league with a tough crowd and escape with a win. Caitlin Welch did a phenomenal job and I think Hannah Kvitle had her best setting performance of the year today," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.
U of L hit .294 and outblocked the Eagles 8-6 as they improved its record to 20-3 and 9-1 in the league. Marquette moves to 18-4 and 8-1 in the conference. Lola Arslanbekova had 24 kills, two aces and 12 digs which marks the 13th time this season with 20+ kills in a match (including five of last six). Libero Caitlin Welch had 22 digs. Hannah Kvitle had 23 assists. MU was led by Lindsey Gosh's 17 kills. U of L fell behind 4-1 early in the first set but took their first lead at 14-13. The Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to go up 21-16. Two Louisville errors and a kill by Erin Lehman pushed MU to set point. Emily Juhl and Kaitlynn James each scored to hold off the loss but a kill by Kelsey Mattai gave MU the 25-20 win.
With today's win (#20), the Cardinals now have 25 seasons with 20 or more victories, including 12 of the last 13 seasons.
U of L used an 9-2 run in the second set to take a 20-10 lead. The Eagles scrabbled back with six unanswered points to pull within four at 20-16. U of L kept the heat on and cruised to a 25-17 win. Arslanbekova had five kills and Tanya Lukyanenko had three kills and three blocks in the set. Emily Juhl pitched in four kills with no errors.
Momentum swings was the order of the day in the third set. After trading points early, U of L took the lead at 12-11 after a 3-0 run. Marquette tied at 13 and then had five straight points to go up 18-13 and force Kordes to use both timeouts during the run. The Cards had 11-1 run down the stretch for the win as Marquette burned both timeouts to try to squelch the comeback. Emily Juhl paced the Cards with four kills.
In the fourth set, U of L powered out to a 13-7 lead before Marquette regrouped in a timeout to get a 4-1 run going to come within four at 14-10. The teams traded points and with U of L up 16-11, MU was able to run off three straight to come back to within two at 16-14. The Cards went up 19-13 before a service error by Caitlin Welch stopped a run with the cards up 19-16. A 6-3 run closed out the set and match with the 25-19 win.
U of L faces long-time rival Cincinnati next Sunday in Cincinnati on ESPNU.
