LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ahlivia Spencer broke the school's six-year-old 600m record at the Indiana Relays, and the University of Louisville track and field teams concluded the first day of the meet with 12 top-five finishes at the Gladstein Fieldhouse on the campus of Indiana University on Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind.
Spencer, already the school's record-holder in the 500m, which she set last year, raced to a time of 1:32.65 in the 600m to break Heather Trimiew's 2006 mark of 1:34.24.
Including Spencer's record-breaking performance Friday night, the Cardinals' sprints and hurdles group, under the watch assistant coach Terry Winston, now have broken six school records. Last year, the women's relays group broke the indoor and outdoor 4x400m records - the outdoor mark stood for five years - and Spencer etched her name next to the 500m mark, which previously was set in 2006.
The sprints group's success wasn't based solely around Spencer either, as Margret Harris clocked the quickest time in the 60m trials to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. She took third in the 200m to solidify a spot in the event at the BIG EAST Championships. On the men's side, Calvin Arsenault earned an eighth-place showing in the 60m hurdles to move on to Saturday's semifinals. Newcomer Emmanuel Matadi made a splash as well in his Cardinal debut, running to a time of 6.95 in the 60m to earn a place in Saturday's semifinals.
Michelle Molodynia (mile) and Gordon Dooley (3,000m) also had solid performances on the track, qualifying for the league's indoor championships. Molodynia had a collegiate-best time of 5:06.21 to take eighth in the event, while Dooley set a personal-best of 8:22.01 for a third-place showing. Other notable performances on the track included Luke Lovelace's third-place finish in the mile, and Madie Davidson's season-best time of 4:57.95 in the mile.
In the field events, Seon Powell, who already met the qualifying standard in the long jump, earned a BIG EAST qualifying mark in the triple jump. Powell leapt 15.20m/49-10.50 for a third-place finish, and he's slated to compete Saturday in the long jump. On the women's side, Charachesicia Lockhart secured her second win of the indoor season in the triple jump, registering a leap of 12.36m/40-6.75. Also in the jumps department, Kevin Jackson tied his personal-best in the pole vault by clearing 4.90m/16-0.75 and finished fifth in the event.
Sam Bombaugh and Brad Vivace led the charge in the throws group, as Bombaugh improved upon his collegiate-best mark in the shot put with a heave of 16.84m/55-3 to take third. Vivace, meanwhile, took second in the weight throw finals.
Louisville continues action in the second day of the Indiana Relays on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. Live results will be available on www.IUHoosiers.com.
