LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's tennis started off their dual season on a positive note with convincing 7-0 victory over in-state rival Morehead State Wedensday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It's always good to start the season with a comfortable win." said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "The biggest thing we accomplished today was being able to keep our focus for long periods of time, which has been a problem in the past."
U of L took all three doubles matches with Manuela Velasquez and Amelia Harris winning 8-0 in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 spot, Mandy Brown and Rebecca Shine won their doubles match 8-3 while Sarah Miller and Stefanie Villajuan took their match 8-2 at No. 3 spot.
In the singles matches, the Cards won all six matches in straight sets. Rebecca Shine led the Cards in the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alix Young. Mandy Brown in the No. 2 spot defeated Victoria Cran 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 3 spot for the Cards, Manuela Velasquez cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Morehead's Alexis Garrett. Gabrielle Duncan and Jessica Montemayor played the most exciting match of the day with U of L's Duncan pulling out the match 7-5 in the second set leading her to a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Sarah Miller and Amelia Harris both had impressive outings with Miller winning her match 6-0, 6-2 and Harris cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
"If you look at the scoreline there were a lot of comfortable wins which show development in our players." said Beckham. "We have to keep our focus going into this weekend when we play #24 Arkansas at their place, and a very talented Stephen F. Austin team."
