
Swimming and Diving Buries Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan

CINCINNATI - The nationally ranked University of Louisville swimming and diving teams opened up 2012 by making quick work of Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan in a double dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Keating Natatorium on the campus of Cincinnati St. Xavier High School.
The men won 13 events and defeated Cincinnati 250-50 while dropping Eastern Michigan 209-91. The U of L women captured 11 events and dominated Cincinnati 223-75 and Eastern Michigan 217-82.
Three-race winners included Joao De Lucca in the 50-free, the 100-free and the 200 free relay; Pedro Oliveria in the 200-medley relay, the 200-back and the 500-free; Victoria Mitchell in the 100-back, 200-back and 500-free while six Cardinals won two events on the afternoon.
In the women's 200-medley relay, the U of L foursome of Mary Mittel, Lindsay Rogers, Raine Thompson and Dani Barbiea combined to post the winning time of 1:44.03 and were followed by the B-relay team consisting of Eszter Povazsay, Fanny Lilliestrom, Tanja Kylliainen and Grite Apanaviciute who touched just .55 seconds later.
Brendon Andrews opened up a .55 second lead after the first leg of the men's 200-medley relay while teaming up with Carlos Almeida, Pedro Oliveria and Matt Schlytter to capture first at 1:31.02. Louisville's A-relay team of Caryle Blondell, Kameron Chastain, Tim Collins and Albert Lloyd placed second at 1:31.98.
Freshman Abby Chin warded off Eastern Michigan junior Briana Emig to win the grueling 1650-free with a time of 16:51.58 while fellow classmate Erika Wozniak was third, coming in at 17:11.67
On the men's side of the 1,650-free sophomore Charlie Bolgan coasted to an 11.06 second victory over teammate Riley Martin touching the wall at 15:55.35.
Louisville captured the top three spots in the women's 200-free when Eszter Povazsay, Hanna Cowley and Breann McDowell touched at 1:51.82, 1:52.77 and 1:53.72.
On the men's side the Cardinals captured the top four spots. Alex Burtch touched first a 1:40.50 and was followed by Brendon Andrews who finished at 1:41.68. Albert Lloyd finished at 1:42.98 while Ben Ogle posted a time of 1:44.26.
The women posted another top three sweep in the 100-backstroke when freshman Victoria Mitchell touched at 57 seconds flat. Raine Thompson was second at 58.04 and was followed by Lacey Bobo just 0.32 seconds later.
Eastern Michigan's Jacob Hanson took medalist honors on the men's side touching at 50.12 and was followed by Cardinal senior Pedro Oliveria at 50.39 and freshman Caryle Blondell at 50.79.
Cincinnati's Helena Pikhartova captured first in the women's 100-breat at 1:03.27. Louisville Gisselle Kohoyda was second at 1:05.18 and was followed by Lindsay Rogers at 1:05.54 and Aileen Cole at 1:06.20.
In the men's 100-breast Michael Haefner captured first at 57.12 and was followed by freshman Addison Bray at 57.64. Kenny Crapse captures third at 58.63 to give the men's team their third sweep in the first five events.
Freshman Tanja Kylliainen ran away from the field in the women's 200-fly posting a time of 1:59.12, just seven seconds over Eastern Michigan's Jackie Swartz. Louisville's Emily Conway place third at 2:06.32
Riley Martin guided the Cards to another sweep in the men's 200-fly posting the winning time of 1:52.71, just out-touching sophomore Juan Lopez who finished at 1:52.92. Kevin Bandy was third at 1:54.24.
Louisville placed second through fifth in the women's 50-free when Lacey Bobo took second at 24.14 just out-touching freshman Dani Barbiea at 24.20. Grite Apanaviciute was fourth with a mark of 24.43.
The men placed first through fourth in the men's 50-free with Joao De Lucca sprinting to a first place finish with a time of 20.61. Sophomore Kameron Chastain was second at 21.18 with junior Matt Schlytter right on his heals at 21.22.
Eastern Michigan was awarded first through third place in all diving events per mutual decisions by the coaches as the diving was held in the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville. Lindsey Stephens and Emily Stalmack posted marks of 291.15 and 287.92 respectively in the women's 1-meter.
On the men's side junior Nikolas Sachs placed fourth at 343.84 while fellow classmate Korey Schrock was fifth at 284.85.
The women's 100-free saw Aileen Cole place second at 52.62 while Grite Apanaviciute was right behind her at 53.28.
Joao De Lucca sprinted to his second first place finish of the afternoon in the men's 100-free by posting the winning time of 44.66, nearly two seconds ahead of freshman Caryle Blondell who touched at 46.64.
Victoria Mitchell captured first in the women's 200-back at 2:02.18 and was followed by junior Eszter Povazsay at 2:03.51.
Pedro Oliveria captured medalist honors in the men's 200-back at 1:47.08 while sophomore Juan Lopez captured third with a time of 1:51.66.
Fanny Lilliestrom placed first in the women's 200-breast with a time of 2:16.22, nearly three seconds better than teammate Tanja Kylliainen. Gisselle Kohoyda was third at 2:20.03.
Kameron Chastain dashed to a first place victory in the men's 200-breast with a mark of 2:04.86 and was followed by Addison Bray at 2:06.96.
Freshmn Victoria Mitchell outpaced Eastern Michigan's Briana Emig in the women's 500-free at 4:58.05. Freshman Erika Wozniak captured third at 5:02.85.
Pedro Oliveria distanced himself away from the field in the men's 500-free with a field-best time of 4:37.21. Sophomore Charlie Bolgan was third at 4:45.89.
Louisville took the top four spots in the women's 100-fly with Raine Thompson touching first with a time of 57.27. Freshman Abby Chin was right behind at 57.43 just out-touching Dani Barbiea by 0.01 seconds.
Tim Collins bested Carlos Almeida in the men's 100-fly with a time of 50.21 while Almeida touched at 50.68.
Lindsey Stephens and Emily Stalmack placed fourth and fifth respectively in the women's 3-meter. Stephen's 330.46 mark was the highest of the meet in the 3-meter on both the women's and men's side. Stalmack added a score of 257.56.
Nikolas Sachs placed fourth in the men's 3-meter with a mark of 330.45 while Korey Schrock scored a 317.18.
Louisville captured the top three spots in the women's 400-IM with Abby Chin taking medalist honors with a time of 4:25.27. Fanny Lilliestrom was second at 4:27.91 while Stephanie Juncker captured third with a time of 4:31.29.
In the men's 400-IM, Carlos Almeida finished nearly three seconds ahead of teammate Alex Burtch with time of 4:01.86 and 4:04.12 respectively.
The women closed out the meet by capturing first in the 200-free relay when Aileen Cole, Grite Apanaviciute, Lacey Bobal and Dani Barbiea teamed up to post a mark of 1:34.31.
The men closed out the meet with a one-two punch after capturing the top two spots in the men's 20-free relay. Caryle Blondell, Brendon Andrews, Matt Schlytter and Joao De Lucca stormed to a 1:22.17 mark and were followed by Kameron Chastain, Albert Lloyd, Michael Pryor and Carlos Almeida who posted a time of 1:25.60.
The men's swimming and diving team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 20 in the Men's SMU Classic in Dallas Texas. The women's swimming and diving team returns to action in a co-ed dual meet at Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.
