Outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova had a match-high 19 kills, two aces and 12 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-15, 25-15, 26-24 sweep of DePaul in BIG EAST volleyball action Friday night in Chicago.
"It is good to get a road win," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "We had great, aggressive serving and incredible passing tonight. I thought Tanya Lukyanenko had a nice night showing us what we have been working on with her all week."
U of L (11-4, 3-0) hit .265 with five blocks and eight aces. Tanya Lukyanenko joined Arslanbekova in double digit kills with 10, hitting .529 and adding three blocks. Kaitlynn James had 10 digs and two blocks. The Blue Demons (4-12, 1-2) were led by Natalie Rizzo's eight kills.
U of L built a 16-12 lead and then ran off seven unanswered points to put the first set out of reach for a 25-15 win. The Cards hit .353 as a team with Lola Arslanbekova recording six kills and five digs. Aggressive serving caught DePaul three times with Caitlin Welch notching two of the Cards' three aces in the set.
Louisville ran out to an 11-2 lead in the second set and stretched the lead to 11 at 21-10. After hitting set point, DePaul did score three straight before a service error cut short the rally and U of L took the 25-15 win. Hitting was frigid for both teams with UL holding a .167 to .038 margin. DPU outblocked the Cards 4-3. Tanya Lukyanenko had five kills in the set.
The Cardinals had their hands full with a determined DePaul squad in the third set. The Blue Demons pulled out to a 8-2 lead and the Cards managed to tie at 11 but did not take the lead until 21-20 on a solo block by Kaitlynn James. DePaul made a 4-1 run and got to set point but James put another kill down, a hitting error by Molly Creek gave U of L set point and setter Taylor Brauneis dumped for the set and match point.
The Cardinals play Notre Dame Sunday at 2 p.m. in Notre Dame, Ind., as BIG EAST action continues.
