ATHENS, Ohio - Lola Arslanbekova had 18 kills and eight digs en route to MVP honors as the University of Louisville swept Marshall 25-18, 25-19, 26-24 to win the Baymont Bobcat Classic Saturday night in Athens, Ohio.
"This was a great weekend to be able to bounce back from the loss to Kentucky on Wednesday," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "Emily Juhl did a fantastic job and setter Taylor Brauneis made some phenomenal decisions at some key times. Caitlin Welch kept us system and made it easier. Lola Arslanbekova gets to a spot where she cannot be stopped. These are three important wins."
The Cardinals (8-2) hit .337 and aced the Herd three times. Marshall hit .180 but outblocked U of L 8-7. Emily Juhl, who joined Arslanbekova on the All-Tournament team, had 10 kills and three blocks. Libero Caitlin Welch had a match-high 14 digs and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as well.
In the first set, U of L fell behind 7-3 early before using an 8-1 run to go up 11-8 and never trailed again. Hitting .438 as a team, U of L was led by Lola Arslanbekova's six kills. Caitlin Welch had 10 digs in the first set alone.
U of L built a 13-8 lead early in the second set and by 17-12 had forced Marshall to use both timeouts. The Herd had a 3-0 run to come within two at 17-15 but could get no closer as the Cards prevailed 25-19. Louisville hit .296 and had three blocks in the set. Arslanbekova added five more kills to her totals.
A determined Marshall team emerged from the break, took a 9-6 lead and increased the margin to 16-9, causing Louisville to burn both timeouts to regroup. The Cardinals scrambled to within two after a 3-0 run at 17-15, forcing an MU timeout. The Herd got to set point at 24-20 and the Cards dug in and tied at 24 on a kill by Lola Arslanbekova before a Herd error tipped the set and match to the Cardinals.
