LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams completed the Cardinal Twilight, a last-chance meet, late Friday evening at Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium.
Chinwe Okoro led a contingent of strong performances from the throws group, recording two first-place finishes. Not only did she win the shot put (16.74m/54-11.25) and discus throw (54.24m/177-11) titles, but her marks are good enough to rank in the top-15 nationally. They also are career-best marks. D'Ana McCarty won the hammer throw on a toss of 60.28m/197-9 and came in second in the shot put (16.40m/53-9.75).
Weston Banks paced the men's group by taking runner-up in the shot put on a throw of 17.72m/58-1.75. His season-best mark of 17.75m/58-3 is tied for 33rd nationally. Senior classmate Josh Greenwald had a season-best throw of 53.84m/176-8 in the discus to place third, and freshman Sam Bombaugh topped his season-best mark in the hammer throw on a toss of 55.13m/180-10 to finish eighth.
Megan Schubert, Rachel Gehret and Seon Powell continued the success in the field events, as Schubert won the high jump title after clearing 1.73m/5-8. Gehret won the women's long jump competition by leaping 6.09m/19-11.75. Currently, she ranks in the top 45 in all three jumping disciplines (long jump, triple jump and high jump). Powell, competing in just his second outdoor long jump, charted a career-best mark of 7.47m/24-6.25.
On the track, the women's 4x100m relay team opened competition with a third-place showing. The quartet of Margret Harris, Gehret, Chelsea Brown and Gabrielle Jackson clocked a time of 45.92.
Harris (200m), Jackson (400m hurdles) and Brown (400m hurdles) also ran in the individual short-distance events. Harris placed fourth in her respective event in 24.09, while Jackson finished runner-up in her race. On the men's side, Jordon Frazier navigated his way to a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles.
Matt Hughes had a strong showing in the 1,500m, running to a time of 3:49.48 for a second-place finish. Luke Lovelace placed fifth in the event with a time of 3:50.44.
In the women's 5,000m, Kim Grieshaber shaved five seconds off her season-best mark, racing to a time of 17:17.35 for a runner-up finish.
Next up for the Cardinals is the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Ind., on the campus of Indiana University. The three-day event begins on May 26 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
