PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Lola Arslanbekova had 19 kills and a block to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 sweep of Rutgers in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in New Brunswick, N.J.
"I am proud of this East Coast swing to get two road league wins and in a sweep says a lot about our team dealing with adversity and injury," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "I thought Caitlin Welch did a great job in serving and passing. We got two big blocks from Gosia Lech and Lola continues to lead our offense."
U of L hit .275 and outblocked the Scarlet Knights 6-4. Caitlin Welch had a match-high 11 digs and Taylor Brauneis notched 34 assists and led in aces with two.
Neither team could get a foothold in the early going of the first set. Tied at 11, U of L put together an 8-2 run to pull out to an 18-14 lead and then held the Knights at arm's length to cruise to the 25-19 win. U of L hit .226 in the first set with two blocks. Lola Arslanbekova scored the last three points of the set for the Cards.
In the second set, U of L used a 5-1 run early to build a four point spread at 14-10 and force a Rutgers timeout. The regroup didn't swing momentum for the Knights as the Cards reeled off five straight to go up 18-10. The Knights called timeout at 21-12 as the Cards were clearly in a groove. Taylor Brauneis served for three straight points including the game winning ace. U of L hit .250 and RU's -.031 hitting did little for the Knight offense.
U of L carried the momentum in to the third set, building a 19-10 lead and then cruising to the 25-16 win.
