Lola Arslanbekova had 21 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 29-27, 25-18 and 25-21 sweep of Seton Hall in BIG EAST volleyball action Friday night in South Orange, N.J.
"It was a great road win," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "Seton Hall played scrappy defense and with a lot of heart and drive. They did a great job. Brooke Mattingly and Taylor Brauneis had a nice offensive outing."
U of L (13-4, 5-0) hit .263 as a team and outblocked the Pirates 10-3. The Cards survived 13 service errors because SHU's .103 hitting percentage hindered the Pirate comeback. Brooke Mattingly and Taylor Brauneis each had seven kills with no errors. Brauneis added a match-high 35 assists. Gosia Lech hit a perfect three for three. SHU was led by Meghan Matusiak's 11 kills.
The Cardinals were sluggish out of the gate and did not take the lead until 13-12, after which U of L went on a 5-1 run to go up 18-14 and force an SHU timeout. The Pirates battled back and retook the lead at 21-20, sparking a U of L timeout. SHU scored three straight after the timeout and Kordes used her last timeout to reset. U of L tied at 24 and then the teams traded points with U of L scoring two straight after the squads were knotted at 27. A kill by Lola tipped the set to the Cardinals, 29-27. U of L hit .298 led by Lola's 11 kills in the first set.
After tying at 16 in a tightly contested second set, U of L put together a 9-2 run down the stretch for the 25-18 win. Lola added five kills and Emily Juhl came off the bench despite a nagging leg injury to help seal the win.
U of L took the lead early in the third and final set, going up 11-6. SHU kept attacking and pulled within one after a 4-0 run at 19-18. But the Cards scored six of the last eight points for the 25-21 win.
