LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind a strong performance from redshirt senior Kim Grieshaber, the University of Louisville women's cross country team captured the team title at University of Evansville's Mid-America Opener Saturday morning.
With an impressive 14:20 in the 4K, Grieshaber won the individual title on the women's side. Sophomore Cassie Martin, a newcomer to this year's squad, also competed for the Cardinals.
"I'm very pleased with how the women executed the race and that they were able to get team championship," head cross country coach Brice Allen says. "The team ran a tactically smart race, and Kim won convincingly with a mile to go."
On the men's side, the Cardinals lost in a close team battle to Indiana State.
Individually, redshirt senior Michael Eaton paced the Cards, finishing in second with a time of 17:32 in the 6K. Freshman Tyler Byrne, who made his collegiate debut, took seventh after completing the race in 17:55. Redshirt sophomore Gordon Dooley, sophomore Evan Hibbs and freshman Ryan Eaton took 9th, 10th and 11th, respectively.
"We need to regroup and come together as a team," Allen says of the men's side. "We're going to prepare vigorously and get ready for our next race."
The Cardinal men and women return to action in two weeks when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational Sept. 18.
