
Volleyball Falls to Pirates

Anastasia Artemeva's 16 kills and four blocks were not enough as the University of Louisville fell 3-2 to Seton Hall for the Pirates' first-ever win over the Cardinals in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Arena. SHU won 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 15-13.
The Cardinals (6-5, 1-1) out hit the Pirates .263 to .150 and outblocked 17-9. However 13 service errors and five blocking errors were enough tip the match to the Pirates (6-11, 1-1). Setter Taylor Brauneis had a career-high, match-high 12 digs and added 27 assists. Senior middle blocker Amanda Simmons had eight blocks and three kills for the Cardinals. The Pirates were led by Sarah Osmun's 21 kills.
In the first set, U of L fell behind 6-1 in the early going and could never gain the lead due to .371 hitting by the Pirates. Emily Juhl and Lola Arslanbekova combined for 11 of the Cardinals' 14 kills in the 25-20 loss. Although there were six ties, U of L could not sustain a drive to take the lead in the second set. Both teams' hitting cooled considerably with Seton Hall hitting .160 and U of L connecting on at just a .185 pace. Down one at 20-19, SHU scored five of the last seven points for the 25-21 win.
Down 2-0 in sets, the Cardinals did not take the lead until 14-13 and then had to hold off a hard charging Pirate team that reeled off three straight to come back to within two at 20-18. However, Tanya Lukyanenko scored three straight for U of L and Seton Hall could manage just one more point before falling 25-19.
U of L took command early in the fourth set, going up 11-5. The Pirates cut the lead to two at 16-14 on a kill by Meghan Matusiak. U of L responded with three s traight points to force a timeout at 19-14. SHU was deserted by its hitting as they hit -.057 in the set. Meanwhile, U of L blocking had SHU hitting stymied by the four Cardinal roofs. Artemeva had four kills.
In the deciding set, after leading 6-2, U of L allowed the Pirates to go on a 6-0 run to go up 8-5 . The Cardinals managed to tie at ten but SHU scored five of the last six points for the win.
U of L hits the road this coming weekend, playing UConn on Friday at 7 p.m. and then over to St. John's on Sunday at two.
