LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite facing a tough field, the University of Louisville men's cross country team battled to a second-place finish at the Navy Invitational Saturday afternoon in Annapolis, Md., at the USNA Golf Club.
Competing in his first race of the season, Matt Hughes covered the course in 24:02.11 to take second place, leading the Cardinals to a runner-up showing in a nine-team field. The Cardinals scored 38 team points, falling a mere four points short of overtaking Navy (35) for the team title. More impressively was Hughes, whose time in the 8,000-meter race becomes the 13th-fastest mark on Navy's course.
"The men lost a tough team race to the Naval Academy, who ran well on their home course," head cross country coach Brice Allen says. "I was impressed with how well our group packed, especially the underclassmen."
The Cardinal men had six finishers in the top 13. Completing the course behind Hughes was Michael Eaton (third with 24:10.69), Gordon Dooley (10th), Tyler Byrne (11th), Luke Lovelace (12th) and Evan Hibbs (13th). Eaton also managed to make headway into the course's best times' list, as his mark is good enough for No. 22.
On the women's side in the Salty Dog Invitational, Kim Grieshaber was again the Cardinals' leader. Taking second place, with the team finishing fifth, Grieshaber navigated the 6,000-meter course in 22:00.3, good enough for sixth-best all-time among women at the USNA Golf Club.
Newcomer Monica Hernandez was the team's second-scoring runner, as she crossed the finish line seventh in 22:53.5. Emily Borsare rounded out the team's top-three finishers, earning 11th.
"Our top three runners placed in the top 11 against a competitive corps," Allen adds. "We need to bring the gap down from our first to fifth runner, though."
The Cardinals will rest for two weeks before returning to action in the Greater Louisville Classic, the squad's first and only home regular-season race. The men open the day with a race at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women at 10:15 a.m.
