
Volleyball Falls to Purdue

Freshman hitter Emily Juhl's 11 kills were not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 25-21, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18 to Purdue in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge Friday night at Cardinal Arena.
"As a young team, we are still learning how to believe in ourselves," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We need to maintain our confidence as a team. Also unforced errors took a toll on us."
U of L was outhit .180 to .134 but did outblock the Boilers 10-8. Lola Arslanbekova added 11 kills and 10 digs and a block. Gwen Rucker hit .429 with nine kills and five blocks. Purdue was led by Ariel Turner's 20 kills and three blocks.
In a tightly contested first set, Purdue used a 4-0 run late to get to set point. U of L staved off the win, scoring two points, including a kill by Gwen Rucker. But a kills by Ariel Turner tipped the set to the Boilermakers.
In the second set, U of L hit a blazing .391 and laid down six blocks on the struggling Boilermakers. Purdue burned both their timeouts but still trailed 19-7. Arslanbekova had four kills to pace the Cardinals . Amanda Simmons raised the roof with four blocks.
In the third set, U of L hitting chilled to .000, yet the Cardinals stayed close, tying at 15. U of L were then outscored 10-3 down the homestretch.
In the fourth set, the Cardinals dug themselves a huge hole falling behind 12-4. U of L dug in and pulled to within three at 17-14. Purdue responded with an 8-3 run for the win.
Action continues tomorrow as Cincinnati takes on Purdue at 4:30 and Louisville faces No. 5 Illinois at 7 in Cardinal Arena.
