
Volleyball Sweeps Wright State

Lola Arslanbekova had 14 kills, two aces and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Wright State in volleyball action Friday night in Dayton, Ohio.
"We did what we had to do and we didn't get tight when they made their runs," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin.
The Cardinals (5-2) had seven aces and had 41 kills to WSU's 30. Caitlin Welch keyed the defense with a match-high 15 digs and Gwen Rucker was tough at the net with six blocks. Wright State drops to 3-6 with the 26-24, 25-21, 25-20 loss. The Raiders were led by Heidi Splinter's 11 kills.
In the first set, U of L hit just .126 and had to stave off a hard-charging WSU squad. The Cards were up 22-19 before the Raiders tied at 22 and 24. U of L got a timely kill by Lola Arslanbekova to tip the match to the Cardinals. Both teams recorded three blocks, with U of L's Gwen Rucker recording all three for the Cardinals. Rucker also added seven kills for the Cardinals. Taylor Brauneis had 30 assists for the Cards.
In the second set, U of L hitting improved to .263, but again the Cardinals had to withstand a push by the Raiders. WSU was down 20-16 before coming within one at 21-20 on two straight kills by Jessica Woods. The Cardinals went on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-21. Anastasia Artemeva and Lola Arslanbekova each had four kills for U of L.
The Raiders caught the Cardinals flat-footed coming out of the break and took a 7-4 lead. The teams traded points and after being tied at 16, U of L went on a 9-3 run to get to set and match point on a kill by Artemeva. Lola had a kill from the back row for the win.
