Louisville, Ky. - The 2010 Louisville volleyball season started off with a 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19) victory over the North Dakota State University Bison in the Louisville Invitational. The Cards led the Bison in kills 46-39 and were led by junior Anastasia Artemeva and freshman Emily Juhl, who had 12 and 13 respectively.
"We had a few first game nerves, but we got our first win under our belt," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin. "Anastasia Artemeva had a nice offensive game. The freshman did a good job. The defensive specialists brought us back into the game with their passing."
The Cards began the match with a sluggish start losing the first set to the Bison 15-25. NDSU led the Cards in kills ten to eight and made three four point runs. At the end of the set, the Cards hitting percentage was a forgettable .034 compared to the Bison's .259.
Like the first set, the Cards started the second set slowly, dropping eight of the first ten points. U of L then turned their performance around to dominate the Bison for a ten-point run and eventually took the set 25-19. Emily Juhl and Junior Anastasia Artemeva supplied the Cards with excellent offense by each recording five kills. Welch came on strong to carry the team in defense by adding eight digs. The Cards' hitting warmed up to .500.
The Cards continued their impressive form into the third set. U of L jumped out to a 10-5 lead and didn't look back. Emily Juhl continued her impressive offensive efforts to add 5 kills and helped the Cards take the set 25-17.
The fourth set started off with U of L jumping out to a 6-3 lead. However, the Bison battled back to keep it competitive. Each team matched each others runs to keep the set within two points until the Cards took seven out of the last eight points of the set to win the set 25-19.
Next up for the Cards is the Bobcats of Ohio University Sunday, August 29 at 2:00 pm in the Louisville Invitational.
