After trailing to No. 14 Georgetown 15-6 at the half, Louisville outscored the Hoyas 7-2 in the second half, but it was not enough as U of L fell short 17-13 on Sunday afternoon at U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
"We had some chances to get even closer, but didn't finish," said University of Louisville lacrosse head coach Kellie Young. "We made a few key mistakes and Georgetown took advantage. Danielle made some saves we needed in the second half after a rough first half."
The game was the Friends of Jaclyn Game for the University of Louisville lacrosse team. The Friends of Jaclyn is the organization that pairs pediatric cancer patients and teams who then provide support and encouragement as the child progresses through treatment. Emily, who was adopted by the lacrosse team, was on hand to do the coin flip for the game. Emily's mom shaved her had at halftime with the help of Lianne Bobal and Emily's siblings.
Bergan Foley ripped her 50th goal of the season on Katie Oliverio's 26th assist of the season to start the spark for the Cardinals. The Cardinals went on a 6-0 run over the last 25:45 of the game. Emily Dashiell netted a hat trick over that time span, while Liz Lovejoy had two of her game-high five goals during that stretch.
"I'm looking for more assists," said University of Louisville lacrosse attacker Bergan Foley. "They were face guarding me so that hopefully gets other people open. Katie Oliverio and Liz Lovejoy really stepped up and took control of the attack."
Oliverio, a native of Silver Springs, Md., dished out five assists for the Cardinals (7-5), tying her school record of five set against Manhattan earlier this season. Four of her five assists came in the second half. She also scored twice and had two draw controls on the day for U of L.
"Katie Oliverio had a great game for us," said Young. "It maybe was the best she's ever played for us."
Foley and Dashiell each had one additional goal during the game for U of L, while Danielle Pawliw finished the game with eight saves. Ashby Kaestner led the Hoyas (7-5, 5-0) in scoring with four goals.
"Emily Dashiell, Liz Lovejoy and Ashley King really played solid," said Young. "They really stepped up their game after the loss of Lianne Bobal."
The Hoyas used constant defensive pressure on the Cardinals to slow-down their high powered offense. Louisville had 19 turnovers compared to the Hoyas 15. Louisville was led to 11-17 on clear attempts while the Hoyas only had two unsuccessful conversions in 18 attempts.
The Cardinals will remain home, when they play host to Jacksonville on Saturday, April 17th at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium. The opening draw between the Cardinals and the Dolphins will take place at 1 p.m. This is the first season of varsity lacrosse for Jacksonville. The game will be televised on tape delay on WHAS with Sean Moth providing the play-by-play and Patty Norton handling the color commentary. The game will be a homecoming for Jacksonville volunteer coach Jen Heup, who was the goalie for the first two seasons of the Louisville lacrosse program.
