
Richardson Leads Cards at Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Saravia Richardson's school record setting performance led the way for the University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet on Saturday at Rector Field House.
Louisville had one group of athletes competing at the meet, while another group was in action this weekend at the Alex Wilson Last Chance meet at Notre Dame.
Richardson, a senior from Moreno Valley, Calif., ran a new school and personal record time of 7.26 in the 60-meter dash to win the event. The Central Arizona College transfer clipped her previous best by of 7.43 which she ran two weeks ago at the BIG EAST Championships. Her mark of 7.26 is currently the sixth-best mark in the NCAA this season going into the National Championships next weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her previous mark of 7.43 was the 43rd best in the nation.
Senior Rachel Gehret won the women's long jump with a leap of 20-01.50/6.13m. That mark improved her already NCAA provisional mark on the last regular meet of the season.
Junior D'Ana McCarty and senior Jere' Summers continued their NCAA-leading dominance in the weight throw by placing first and second, respectively.
McCarty threw an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 72-07.25/22.13m. The reigning NCAA champion is undefeated in the weight throw this season going into next weekend's national championships. Summers launched an NCAA automatic qualifying heave of 71-02.50/21.70m.
Summers finished third in the shot put with an NCAA provisional toss of 55-03.50/16.85m. Junior Chinwe Okoro placed sixth in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 51-05.00/15.67m.
Freshman Michelle Theophille won the women's high jump in a tie-breaker with senior Rachel Gehret. Both ladies cleared 5-09.75/1.77m.
On the men's side, senior Tone Belt won the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 25-02.00/7.67m. Belt also placed second in the high jump clearing 6-11.00/2.11m.
Senior Andre Black placed fourth in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 51-09.00/15.77m.
The final list of qualifiers for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships which will be held at the Randall Tyson Indoor Track Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 12-13 will be announced on Monday evening.
