The University of Louisville swimming and diving team swept BIG EAST rival Pitt by winning 19 events for the second meet victory in as many days. The men won 190-109 and the women posted a 177-123 victory.
"We are pleased with the weekend. The challenge of today of was to put together quality performances after last night's challenging meet. We tried to mix up the events a bit to expose different swimmers to different events and a lot of them stepped up," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "I am pleased with the freshmen's progress because they will be a big key on how we develop our younger kids. Right now we have a good blend of experience and youth."
U of L had multiple event wins from Aileen Cole, who won the 50- and 100-free with teammate Eszter Povazsay taking the 100- and 200-back. Pedro Oliveira won the 200-back and the 100-fly. U of L swept the 200-free relay and the women divers won both boards.
"Aileen's experience showed," said Albiero. "She is a very poised competitor right now."
In the 400-medley relay, U of L was second when the B-relay team of Sam Ormand, Sara Hartman, Grite Apanaviciute and Kara Savegnago joined forces for a time of 3:59.62. The men's B-relay finished second, when Adam Isaacs, Kameron Chastain, Tim Collins and Albert Lloyd put up a time of 3:24.41.
In the grueling 1000-free, Pitt took the top two spots with Carly Munchel as the top Cardinal finisher in third with a time of 10:19.40. Breann McDowell also scored a point with a time of 10:33.49. Shane Lichtenberg took the men's 1000-free in 9:29.35, holding off a late charge from teammate Kevin Bandy, who hit the wall in 9:30.52.
In the 200-free, U of L's Sarah Andrews staved off a hard-charging field, posting a 1:51.67 for first. Teammate Lindsey LaPorte scored with a third place finish with a time of 1:53.32. Brendon Andrews left the field in his wake, scoring a decisive first place with a 1:39.97, while Carlos Almeida was second in 1:40.00.
In 3-meter diving, Lindsey Stephens posted the top score of 293.77, just edging teammate Hannah Gadd's 291.60. On the men's side, Cameron Dehn was the top U of L finisher with a second place score of 317.70 and David Zamkov took third with a 290.55.
In 1-meter diving, U of L's David Zamkov finished second with a score of 285.45. Teammate Cameron Dehn was third with a score of 275.62. For the women, Hannah Gadd took the 1-meter honors with a score of 295.12. Lindsey Stephens was second with a score of 284.40.
In the 100-back, Eszter Povazsay hit the wall first in 56.22 with teammate Krissie Brandenburg in hot pursuit, touching in 56.84. Mary Mittel made it a top three sweep with a third place time of 57.36. For the men, Pedro Oliveira finished second in 51.66 behind Pitt's Adam Maczewski's 48.86, which is an NCAA B-cut.
In the 100-breast, Therese Bergstrom bested the competition with a first in 1:03.93. Cardinal freshman Gisselle Kohoyda was second in 1:04.79 and Lindsay Rogers made it a top three sweep by touching third in 1:04.98. Kameron Chastain took first in the men's 100-breast with a time of 55.70, Michael Haefner was second in 57.60 and Kenneth Crapse was fourth in 57.87. In the 200-fly, Pitt's Cookie McIntyre was first in 2:04.65, just edging U of L's Fanny Lilliestrom, who went 2:04.90. Jackie Sherrard was third in 2:06.04. For the men, Michael Pryor surged into first in the last 10 meters for the win in the men's 200-fly with a time of 1:52.73. Riley Martin hung on to second in 1:52.77.
In the 50-free, Aileen Cole was the fastest with a time of 23.15. Lacey Bobo was right in her wake, touching in 24.21. For the men, Brendon Andrews (20.36) was just out-touched by Andrei Dubiel's 20.32 for a margin of four-tenths of a second. Matt Schlytter was third in 20.82 in a tightly contested race.
In the 100-free, Aileen Cole got her second win of the day with a first and a time of 50.58. Sarah Andrews touched second in 51.62 and Mary Mittel made it a top three sweep with a time of 52.14. For the men, Alex Burtch was second in 46.48 just barely ahead of teammate Albert Lloyd's 46.94. Michael Pryor added points with a fourth in 47.07.
Eszter Povazsay got her second win with a 2:00.67 time in the 200-back. Krissie Brandenburg was second in 2:03.44 with freshman Niki Fyfe picking up points with a fourth place time of 2:04.83. After being edged in the 100-back, Pedro Oliveira was first in the 200-back at 1:48.94. Fellow Cardinal Adam Isaacs was third in 1:55.31.
Gisselle Kohoyda powered to a 2:16.08 NCAA B-cut time to win the 200-breast. Therese Bergstrom was second in 2:17.89. Fanny Lilliestrom took third in 2:19.60 to complete the sweep. For the men, Michael Haefner was the top finisher for the Cardinals with a third in 2:06.49.
In the 500-free, Lindsey LaPorte was second for the best Cardinal performance with a time of 5:00.05. Breann McDowell added points with a fourth, going 5:02.83. For the men, Carlos Almeida was first with a time of 4:33.07. Shane Lichtenberg was second in 4:38.35. Riley Martin picked up additional points with a fourth place time of 4:39.42.
In the 100-fly, Mary Mittel turned in the best performance with a time of 57.39, touching right behind Pitt's Caitlin Trant's 56.75. Lacey Bobo was third (57.44) and Raine Thompson scored with a 57.69. On the men's side, Pedro Oliveira powered to the wall in 50.43 with Tim Collins touching just a fraction behind for second in 50.58.
In the 200-IM, Fanny Lilliestrom was a full second ahead of the runner-up with a time of 2:05.95. Stephanie Juncker was third with a time of 2:07.89. For the men, Albert Lloyd won the 200-IM with a time of 1:53.95. Teammate Alex Burtch was second in 1:55.21. Michael Haefner added points with a fourth place finish with a time of 1:55.38 in a tight finish.
In the 200-free relay, the foursome of Aileen Cole, Nicole Landisch, Lacey Bobo and Sarah Andrews combined to post a time of 1:33.76. The B-relay team of Krissie Brandenburg, Eszter Povazsay, Breann McDowell and Sam Ormand joined forces for a time of 1:37.54 and a third place. For the men, the A-relay team of Brendon Andrews, Matt Schlytter, Michael Pryor and Carlos Almeida put together a time of 1:22.62. The B-relay team of Kameron Chastain, Alex Burtch, Albert Lloyd, and Jordan Rees was third with a time of 1:25.27.
