Volleyball Snaps Notre Dames Unbeaten League Streak 3-1

Freshman outside hitter Emily Juhl's career-high 16 kills helped the University of Louisville snap Notre Dame's 19-match regular season BIG EAST unbeaten streak with a 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17 win Saturday morning in Cardinal Arena.
U of L hit .291, recorded five aces and outblocked the Irish 12-5 to raise their record to 9-5 and 4-1 in the BIG EAST. Junior hitter Anastasia Artemeva added 14 kills and the Cardinals were led by Amanda Simmons' six blocks. Notre Dame (11-6, 4-1) hit .173 and was plagued by 11 service errors. Andrea McHugh paced UND with 15 kills.
"This was a team effort today," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We were able to mix up our attack by distributing the ball and our blocking affected the way their hitters approached their offense."
The Cardinals overcame .059 hitting and used an 8-2 run late in the first set for the 25-21 win. Artemeva led with three kills and Juhl added two aces.
U of L fell behind 9-4 early in the second match but fought back to within two at 22-20. The Irish gained set point on a hitting error by setter Taylor Brauneis. The Cardinals scored twice but fell 25-23. Lola Arslanbekova came off the bench to add three kills.
The third set stayed close but U of L never trailed and used a 7-2 run midway through the set to take a 21-15 lead and forced UND to burn its final timeout. An Irish service error took the Irish to set point and a block by Simmons and Brauneis tipped the set to the Cardinals 25-19.
The Cardinals built an eight point lead at 19-11 and then used .556 hitting to cruise to the 25-17 win. The victory cost the Irish an 19-match BIG EAST regular season streak dating back to 2008 when St. John's beat the Irish 3-2 on Nov. 14.
Juhl recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs and teammate Caitlin Welch notched a career-high, team-high 19 digs. Brauneis posted a match-high 47 assists, adding 10 digs for her third double-double.
The Cardinals are back in action Sunday afternoon when they face BIG EAST foe DePaul in a match slated for 2 p.m.
