LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind a 12th-place finish from Matt Hughes and a 31st-place result from Michael Eaton, the University of Louisville men's cross country team took 10th in the team standings at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
In the 35-team field, the Cardinal men placed ahead of five teams - Michigan State (20th), UCLA (26th), Ohio State (RV), Montana State (RV) and UTEP (RV) - that were either ranked in the Top 30 or receiving votes in U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association's national poll.
"I'm certainly pleased with men's Top 10 performance," head cross country coach Brice Allen says. "It's a good start in building momentum toward the BIG EAST Championships.
"I was really impressed by Matt Hughes' and Kim Grieshaber's performances today. They ran well for us today."
Hughes, who's shown remarkable progression from a year ago, bettered his result from last year's race by 80 spots. He crossed the finish line of the 8K in 23:58.5, while Eaton clocked a time of 24:14.8. Both runners improved their time as well, as Hughes' mark was more than a minute quicker than his 2009 result. True freshman Tyler Byrne completed another impressive race, taking 70th out of a field of 231 runners.
"I'm excited about Michael Eaton and Tyler Byrnes, who ran really well for us," Allen adds. "We continue to work to bring down the gap from 1-5 as we move ahead toward the championship run."
On the women's side, Grieshaber navigated the 6,000-meter course in 20:57.7 to take 27th-place, making her the squad's top finisher for the fourth-straight race. Similar to Hughes and Eaton, the Versailles, Ky., native bettered her time by nearly a full minute.
Emily Borsare was the Cardinals' second finisher, as she took 63rd, followed by newcomer Monica Hernandez (171st), who rounds out the team's top three placewinners.
Next on the slate for the Cardinals is the BIG EAST Championships, which are set to take place on Oct. 30, at Jamesville Beach Park in Syracuse, N.Y.
