
Volleyball Tips Tennessee Tech 3-1

Freshman outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova had 17 kills and 11 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over visiting Tennessee Tech in college volleyball action in the first round of the Cardinal Classic Friday night in Cardinal Arena.
U of L moves to 5-2 with the 25-18, 20-25, 25-14, 25-14 win over TTU (1-7). The Cardinals hit .354 for the match and outblocked the Eagles 10-2. U of L notched seven service aces, led by Kimi Hohl's four. Gwen Rucker led the blocking crew with nine. Hohl and Justine Landi each had 21 assists. TTU was led by Louisville native Leah Meffert, who had a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs.
"We expect to do better each time we take the court," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "In the meantime we will keep coaching, keep focusing on the positive and take away from every match the good things we do and build from that."
U of L hit .423 in the first game and used a five point run for the win. Lecia Brown hit a perfect four for four with two blocks to lead the Cardinals. In the second game, U of L fell behind by six at 14-8 and struggled to make up the deficit. The youthful Cards hung on and staved off set point four times but fell 25-20. TTU hitting heated up to .324. Lola added four kills for the Cardinals.
U of L regrouped after the break and after tying the Eagles at 10, U of L went on a 15-4 run to swamp the Eagles 25-14. In the final set, TTU stayed close early, tying at 10 again but this time they cut the lead to five at 17-12 but then were outgunned 8-2 down the stretch to tip the match to the Cardinals.
In earlier action, Toledo beat Liberty 3-0. The Cardinals return to Cardinal Arena for the 11 a.m. match against Toledo. TTU takes on Liberty at 1 p.m .and then Toledo at 5 p.m. U of L will face Liberty in the nightcap, beginning at 7 p.m.
