FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Louisville senior Andrew Hackney earned the third All-American honor for the Cardinal men on the final day of the 2009 NCAA Track and Field Championships at John McDonnell Field.
Hackney concluded a brilliant career by finishing 12th in the discus with a distance of 177-02 (54.01m) on his third and final throw. Hackney, who was among the top eight American born finishers, became the 12th Outdoor All-American in men's program history, including the second in the throws and third in the discus. The BIG EAST runner-up in the event earned an at-large bid and entered ranked no. 17 on the NCAA list.
"Hackney has worked so hard to get to this point and it is a great way for him to go out as an All-American," said U of L head coach Ron Mann.
The Cards matched the most All-American performances at the NCAA Championships (2007 outdoor and indoor) with three, including seventh place finishes from Cory Thorne (3,000m Steeplechase) and Tone Belt (high jump) on Friday night. Since Mann took over the reigns in 2004, U of L has collected 15 All-American honors, including at least one in the last four years, after previously only having two.
"Certainly we are starting to emerge as a national power and I couldn't be prouder," said Mann. "It is a great representation of the work the coaching staff has put in, the support of the administration from top to bottom and the resources the school has given us."
On the women's side, junior Jere' Summers had a disappointing finish to her season as she fouled on all three attempts in the discus. Summers led after the qualifying round and looked poised to finish strong as she had the fourth best throw in school history. She won the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship to earn her first ever bid to the national championships in the discus.
The championships cap a historic season for the Cardinal women as D'Ana McCarty captured the school and program's first ever national championship - winning the indoor weight throw. She became just the fourth All-American for the women and first since Summers earned the distinction in the outdoor shot put a year ago.
The Cardinal men picked up four points and finished tied for 52nd. It marks the fourth straight season U of L has earned points at the national championships. No. 1 Texas A&M won their first outdoor NCAA title with 48 points. They edged out no. 2 Oregon, no. 3 Florida and no. 12 Florida State who finished in a three-way tie for second. In the women's race, no. 1 Texas A&M took home the title with 50 points. No. 2 Oregon finished runner-up with 43 points and were followed by no. 4 Arizona State in third with 41 points.
This concludes the 2009 collegiate season for the Cards. They will have athletes competing at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this month.
