TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Louisville's men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2009 outdoor season on Friday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational meet hosted by Arizona State University.
The hammer throw was the only event on the first day of the meet.
"It was a great opening day to the start of our outdoor season," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We picked up two regional qualifiers and hopefully we can add to that tomorrow."
Junior thrower Lindsey Cook finished second with an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying throw of 187-02 (57.05m), while senior Jessica Shepherd placed eighth with a throw of 155-05 (47.38m).
On the men's side, senior Andrew Hackney placed fourth with a Mideast Regional qualifying and personal best mark of 190-02 (57.97m). The Lawrenceville, Ga. native beat his personal record by just under eight feet in his first outdoor meet of the season.
The Cardinals will have over 40 athletes competing on the final day of the meet on Saturday.
