Bergan Foley's five goals were not enough as the University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 15-12 to the No. 19 Ohio State University at U of L Lacrosse Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The loss marks the first loss of the season for the Cardinals, who are now 4-1. Ohio State improves to 6-1 with the win.
"I have an odd combination of pride and disappointment," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "I was proud that a second year program could compete head to head with a nationally ranked program like Ohio State. However, I was a little disappointed because I thought our own mistakes are what cost us the game."
OSU outshot the Cardinals 37-32 and had a 22-17 ground ball margin. U of L posted 17 draw controls to the Buckeyes' 11 led by Emily Dashiell's six. However, 17 turnovers by the Cardinals hampered their comeback efforts while OSU commited only 10 in the game. Goalkeepers for both teams each had 11 saves.
U of L jumped on the Buckeyes early, taking a 4-0 lead at 19:55 in the first half. Foley had two of those and forced an OSU timeout. The Buckeyes regrouped and went on a 6-2 run that left the scored knotted at six at the half.
Known for a high octane offense, the Cardinals emerged from the lockerroom after the break and scored four of the first five goals of the half to go up 10-7 and forced another Buckeye timeout.
OSU's coach Sue Stimmel lit a fire under her No. 19 ranked Buckeyes who scored seven unanswered goals with Gabby Capuzzi netting two in that run.
Trailing 10-14, the Cardinals got late goals from Liz Lovejoy (5:31) and Bergan Foley (0:18) but it was too little, too late as U of L fell 15-12.
Besides Foley's five, Emily Dashiell added a hat trick with Liz Lovejoy adding a pair and Lianne Bobal and Tara Restly each adding one apiece. Ohio State was led by Alayna Markwordt and Gabby Capuzzi, who each had three. Markwordt added four assists.
