Bergan Foley had six goals to lead the University of Louisville lacrosse team to a 15-13 win over visiting Longwood to move the Cardinals' record to 4-0.
U of L led 9-3 at the half and then had to hold off a hard-charging Longwood second half, when the Lancers outscored the Cards 10-6.
"It was an important win for us," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "We didn't play particularly well in the second half but we learned a lot of lessons on how to maintain a lead, how important draw controls are and running the stall."
U of L extends its winning streak to nine straight, dating back to April 12, 2008. Foley extends her scoring streak to 19 straight games. Liz Lovejoy added a hat trick for the Cardinals with three goals on four shots. Lianne Bobal and Sammy Allen each contributed two apiece. Longwood outshot the Cardinals 31-29 but Louisville held a slight edge in ground balls with 26 to LU's 23. The Lancers posted 16 draw controls to U of L's 14.
Louisville had its biggest lead early in the game when Bergan Foley had four of the Cardinals first nine goals to go up 9-2 on the Lancers.
After the break, Longwood jumped on the Cardinal defense, scoring the first four goals of the half with Dee Warehime scoring twice in 30 seconds. The Lancers kept chipping away, coming to within one at 13-12 at 5:52 on another Warehime goal. But Liz Lovejoy and Bergan Foley gave the Longwood the one two punch at 5:41 and 2:13 to put the game out of reach despite a late goal by LU's Michelle Owen at 2:01.
"It may not be the best `feel good' win but it is a great win for us," said Young. "Our defense played solid and Longwood was good at making their own luck. They played a great second half. We learned the lesson that you have to play hard through the final horn."
On defense, Ashley King had three caused turnovers and Lianne Bobal and Janaye Dzikewich each scooped up five ground balls.
