Sammy Allen had four goals to lead the University of Louisville lacrosse team to a 16-6 win in their season opener against Bryant University.
U of L spread the wealth, with seven different Cardinals getting on the board. Lianne Bobal, Bergan Foley and Liz Lovejoy each had three apiece with Bobal adding two assists to her offensive tally. Emily Dashiell, Danielle Hale and Ruby Devine each added a goal to effort. Allen led with five draw controls.
"This was a good start to the season and we played with consistency," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "I was able to get everybody a little playing time which is good with our next game with such a quick turnaround on Sunday at Manhattan."
The Cardinals had a big first period that saw them jump out to a 6-0 lead before Bryant could respond. The Cardinals, picked to finish sixth in the Big East Conference this season, raced took control of things right off the opening draw. Allen got things started for the visitors scoring just 30 seconds into the contest while Bobal quickly made it 2-0 just 11 seconds later scoring unassisted.
The lead would grow to 6-0 before Delia Glover took a feed from Allison Faiola and one-timed a shot past Cardinals goalie Jen Heup to put the Bulldogs on the board with 18:25 left in the first half.
Louisville would answer with five unanswered goals before BU's Mary Green netted her first career tally with just over a minute left for the half to make it 11-2 Louisville at the break.
The Cardinals outshot the Bulldogs 44-16 overall, and 27-6 in the first period.
Bryant regrouped after the break and managed 10 shots in the second period after being outshot 27-7 in the first period, but it was too little too late as the Cardinals rolled to their first win in the regular season.
Goalkeeper Jen Heup guarded the cage making a total of seven saves.
"Jen Heup had a very nice day in the cage for us," said Young.
Ashley King and Lianne Bobal had five and four ground balls respectively to lead the Cards. Allen had five draw controls.
"Lianne Bobal was everywhere picking up ground balls and Sammy (Allen) was phenomenal in coming up with draw controls and causing turnovers," said Young.
