
Volleyball Beats UConn 3-1

Freshman Lola Arslanbekova had 25 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over visiting UConn in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in the Kentucky International Convention Center. The Cardinals will be the No. 4 seed as the BIG EAST Championship begins on Friday.
The Cardinals improve to 17-10 and 10-4 in the BIG EAST with the 25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16 win. UConn (the projected No. 8 seed) drops to 14-16 and 7-7 in the league. The Cardinals hit .260, outblocked the Huskies 15-6 and notched five aces. Kasey Heckelman had nine kills and two blocks. UConn was led by Chauntay who had 13 kills and two blocks.
"We are happy to finish with good momentum going into the tournament this coming week," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin.
U of L used a 9-1 run in the first set to power to a 25-13 win. The Cardinals hit .227 with Lola Arslanbekova hitting a torrid six of nine swings. UConn was hampered by -.081 hitting and were aced four times, led by Justine Landi's two.
U of L held off a hard-charging Husky team that put together a 7-2 late to come within two at 20-18. Lola had four of the last six points for the 25-20 win. U of L hit .342 with Arslanbekova had seven kills in the set. Lindsey Mango had seven kills in the set. Mango had seven digs in a set that featured several long rallies.
UConn had a 7-0 run in the fourth set to go up 14-10 and then had a 7-0 run for the final seven points for the 25-19 win. The Huskies hit .364 with Chautay Mickens had six kills to lead the UConn attack. The Cards hitting cooled to .121.
The fourth set started out close with U of L one point lead at 7-6. The Cards battled back and took a 19-13 lead and force a UConn timeout. The Huskies scored just three more points as the Cardinals rolled to the 25-16 win.
