ROCK HILL, S.C. - For the second consecutive time this season, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams swept the individual and team awards with the latest performance coming at Saturday's Winthrop Invitational.
Junior Tarah McKay won her second straight individual title to lead the Louisville women to another race title, while junior Scott McClain won his second straight title to lead the Cardinal men to a second straight win.
McKay, from St. Clements, Ont., covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17 minutes, 5 seconds to defeat a field of 159 other runners. The victory gives McKay five career wins, including two straight in 2008. Overall, the Cards had five runners in the top 12 positions to score 31 points overall in the field of 17 teams. South Carolina was a distant second with 109 points, while Davidson was third with 110 points.
Sophomore Emily Borsare earned her second straight impressive finish taking third with a time of 18:15, while Kat Alcorn was sixth with a time of 18:32. Kelsey Page was ninth overall with a time of 18:36, while Kortni Dukes closed the scoring for the Cards with a 12th-place finish and a time of 18:43.
On the men's side, McClain, from Louisville, Ky., earned his second career win just three weeks after winning his first ever title at the Cards' season-opening Mid-America Opener. On Saturday, McClain covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:51 to defeat a field of 121 other runners. Overall, the Cards had five runners in the top nine spots to score 23 points for the win. Appalachian State was second in the field of 14 with 42 points, while Elon was third at 96 points.
Freshman Luke Lovelace earned a career-best third-place finish with a time of 25:11, while newcomer Matt Hughes was fourth at 25:12. Matt Smith finished seventh overall with a time of 25:15, while freshman Chase Violet closed the scoring for the Cards with a ninth-place time of 25:18.
"It was a great meet for us in both the men's and women's races," said Cards' head coach Brice Allen. "Our fifth runners in the men's and women's races really saved the day. We've got work to do for the Greater Louisville Classic, but I'm feeling confident on the progression we've made so far."
Following a week off from competition, the Cards will return to action on Oct. 4 at the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in their only home race of the season.
