Tatyana Kolesnikova had 24 kills and two aces to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Illinois-Chicago in collegiate volleyball action Saturday morning at the Chicago Classic at Mother McAuley High School.
The Cardinals evened their record at 3-3 with the 15-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 win. UIC drops to 3-5. U of L faces defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Penn State later tonight.
"Hitting and blocking were improved and we played with a lot more energy," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "They bounced back mentally from last night."
U of L hit .355 to UIC's .131 and outblocked the Flames 10-2. U of L's Anastasia Artemeva added 10 kills and three blocks. Lecia Brown lead all blockers with five and added a pair of aces to her six kills. UIC was led by Lana Lobdell's 14 kills and three aces.
UIC hit .368 and used a 5-1 run midway through the first to build a comfortable margin at 15-12. The Cardinals took a slight cut out of that lead at 18-16 but then were outscored 7-2 to take the 25-19 loss. Tatyana Kolesnikova had 13 attacks, nine of which she converted to kills with no errors. The Cardinal block made only one appearance in the first set.
Tatyana Kolesnikova's hand stayed hot in the second set as she added six more kills and two aces to help U of L to a 25-18 win. The Cardinals popped out to a 13-8 lead early and later added a 5-0 run to go up 22-13. UIC's Lana Lobdell did what she could with a pair of service aces and three kills but .000 hitting did not help the Flames' cause. The Cardinals hit .400 and had four blocks.
U of L used an 8-3 run at the end of the third set to win 25-15. The Cardinals hit .500, paced by Kolesnikova's four kills. Lecia Brown had three of the Cards' five blocks in that set.
In the final set, U of L strung together an 8-0 run to go up 18-12 and build a margin that was sufficient for the Cards to cruise to the 25-18 win for the match.
