Tatyana Kolesnikova had 11 kills and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a three set sweep of Indiana State in the Cardinals home opener in collegiate volleyball action Saturday evening at Cardinal Arena.
"The house was packed, it was a great crowd," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "I was most pleased with the way our freshman setter ran the offense. We will now work on maintaining our focus throughout the whole match.
The Cardinals won 25-10, 25-19, 25-19 to post their first win. Indiana State is now 0-1. The Sycamores were outblocked 13-1 and hit just .012 to U of L's .479. The Cardinals also tallied five aces.
U of L got nine kills on 12 attacks from senior Jana Matiasovska and Justine Landi added eight with 5 blocks. Freshman setter Renee Tomko had 29 assists and two aces. Gwen Rucker, U of L's freshman who will also play basketball had a match high six blocks.
Indiana State was led by Jodilynn Stoker who had nine kills and five digs for the Sycamores.
Indiana State was sluggish out of the gate in the first set, tallying just four kills on 30 swings and scoring just 10 points. U of L blocking was solid with six roofs, led by Lecia Brown's three. Jana Matiasovska led the way with seven kills and a block. The Cards scorched the Sycamores with .500 hitting.
"The first game was the best thing that was extremely close to how we want to play and how we were playing in preseason practice," said Yelin.
In the second set, ISU hitting improved to .280 and U of L had only two blocks but .481 hitting by the Cardinals was sufficient to take them to a 25-19 win. ISU came within four at 19-15 but then were outscored 6-3 down the stretch.
A scrappy Sycamore team tied the Cardinals six times in the final set but never led. A six point ISU run tied the set at 14 and then again at 18. U of L outscored ISU 7-1 in the final stretch.
