LOUISVILLE, Ky. - First-year attacker Bergan Foley scored a school record six goals as the University of Louisville lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in its history with an impressive 21-8 win over Manhattan College in front of 590 fans on a snowy Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
After opening the game with a 1-0 lead on a Liz Lovejoy goal, the Cards trailed for the first time in school history after back-to-back Manhattan goals over a span of 46 seconds. Caralyn Hickey scored the first goal with 26:56 left and Jillian McGowan gave the Lady Jaspers (1-1) a 2-1 lead with 26:11 remaining.
But the Cards answered the challenge by scoring the next six goals, including two by Foley and two by first-year midfielder Sammy Allen to regain the lead for good with a 7-2 advantage with 18:35 left in the first half. The Cards extended their margin to 14-5 by halftime and led by as many as 14 before Manhattan closed the scoring with a Tara Convery goal with 20 seconds left in the game.
"Today and this weekend absolutely exceeded our expectations, with the way that we played and the wonderful support we received from our fans," said Cards' head coach Kellie Young, who improves to 2-0 at Louisville and 53-24 overall. "I was very impressed with how our team pushed the tempo offensively, and all of our hard work last fall on passing and shooting has really paid off through the first two games. And with six goals, Bergan had a great day on the attack for us."
Through the Cards' two season-opening wins over Bryant University (21-3) and Manhattan, Foley, a native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., and a graduate of Gwynedd Mercy Academy, has 10 goals and 12 total points to lead the way for Louisville.
"It was an exciting weekend for our team and we were really ready to play today," said Foley. "We got off to a great start in the first half and we came out hard in the second half, playing like it was 0-0. We win as a team and today just happened to be the day for me to score, but every goal is a team goal, because we're all working together to set picks and make things happen for each other.
"And with the weather the way it's been this weekend, we couldn't believe how great our fans were and we're all so appreciative of the support."
Joining Foley in the scoring barrage on Sunday was Allen and first-year midfielder Emily Dashiell with four goals each, while Lovejoy added three goals and one assist on the day. First-year attacker Sierra Smith-Hart and first-year midfielder Lianne Bobal closed the scoring for the Cards with two goals each, while first-year attacker Tara Restly led U of L with a game-high four assists.
"Tara Restly had a great day feeding the ball and getting people involved and Emily Dashiell did a wonderful job off the draw," Young said. "This was a good team win for us."
Defensively, the Cards forced 20 of Manhattan's 26 total turnovers, while first-year midfielder Brittany Poist and Dashiell led Louisville with five ground balls each. Louisville was also 10-of-12 on clear attempts, and the Cards won 17 of 31 draw controls.
"I think the key today was our fitness because that, and our team speed, led to a lot of pressure and caused turnovers and I've never coached a team that caused turnovers like we did today," Young said. "I thought Jamie Ward was a real game-changer in the first half with her effort and execution on the draw.
"We'll take a day off from practice on Monday and let our players rest their legs because they've done a lot of running over the last three days. On Tuesday, we'll start preparing for Robert Morris and working on our defense because we've got to learn how to stay on teams and continue to execute with our defense."
Up next, the Cards will host their third straight home game on Sunday, March 2 against Robert Morris University at 1 p.m. ET, at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Admission is free for all Louisville lacrosse games.
