
Volleyball Dispatches DePaul 3-1

Justine Landi had a career-high 22 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over DePaul University in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Arena.
U of L moves to 6-8 and evens their conference mark at 2-2 with the 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-15 win. DePaul falls to 1-15 and 0-4 in league play. U of L hit .242 to DePaul's .106 and outblocked the Blue Demons 14-6.5. Lecia Brown added eight kills and nine blocks for the Cardinals. Lindsey Mango had a match-high 16 digs. DePaul was led by Sarah Cullen's 15 kills. Kate Lecher had a match-high three aces for the Demons.
"Our juniors, Lecia Brown and Justine Landi, are picking up the slack for us," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Our seniors need to bounce back an play at the level we know they are capable of match in and match out."
U of L fell behind 4-l early in the first set but tied at seven and then ran off five straight to go up 11-7. After the Blue Demons called timeout, they were able to stay within arm's length, trailing by just three at 15-12. The Cardinals went on an 8-2 run to build a 22-13 lead. DePaul scored three more points but it was too little too late as U of L used .323 hitting to close the set out at 25-16. Justine Landi led the Cardinals with six kills and Lecia Brown added two blocks and four kills.
DePaul blasted out to a 16-8 lead in the second set and the Cardinals struggled to keep pace. A pair of aces by Kyndell Highland powered a 6-1 run for DePaul boosted the lead to 22-12. U of L scored two straight by Tatyana Kolesnikova and Justine Landi and DePaul used its last timeout to try to chill Cardinal hitting. Maci Wachtel missed a serve coming out of the timeout. The teams traded points but a kill by Lauren Blasi gave DePaul the set and evened the set score at 1-1 going into the break. U of L hit just .125 to DePaul's .333.
In the third set, U of L took off to a 9-3 lead but DePaul kept coming back and came to within one at 18-17 after scoring four unanswered points. U of L was leading 22-19 but allowed the Blue Demons to go on a 4-1 run to tie at 23. Finally two straight kills by Justine Landi gave the Cards the 25-23 win. Landi had six kills in that set.
In the fourth set, U of L went ahead 11-3 in the early going. The Blue Demons got as close a five at 17-12 on two straight kills by Sarah Cullen.
