Justine Landi's 11 kills and two blocks were not enough as the University of Louisville was swept in three sets by visiting Notre Dame in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
"Our offense looked good but we had too many unforced errors which we will have to correct," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Notre Dame played a solid match and took advantage of our lapses."
In their first home match after an 11 match road stretch, U of L moves to 5-8 and 1-2 in the BIG EAST with the 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 loss. Notre Dame moves to 8-7 and is unbeaten in league play at 3-0. Proving that statistics aren't always the story, U of L outhit UND .348 to .319 and outblocked them 9-2. However, UND aced the Cardinals seven times and U of L was in the net nine times.
The Cardinals had help from junior middle blocker Lecia Brown who had six kills and six blocks. Tatyana Kolesnikova added nine kills and a block for the Cardinals. UND was led by Louisvillian Christina Kaelin's 14 kills. Serinity Phillips added 11 as did Kristen Dealy.
Notre Dame used a 7-2 run midway through the first set to go up 22-20 and then finished off the set with an ace by Jamel Nicholas. Despite the 25-22 loss, U of L outhit the Irish .333 to .250 and outblocked them 4-0. Lecia Brown led the Cards with three kills and three blocks. The Irish aced the Cardinals three times, twice by Kristen Dealy.
The Irish used another run with seven unanswered points early in the second set to go up 14-9. The Cardinals rallied to come within one at 21-20 and force an Irish timeout. The Irish hit set point when U of L was called for being in the net. Jana Matiasovska had a kill to stave off set point but a kill by Christina Kaelin gave UND the 25-23 win. The Irish hit .350 to establish a 2-0 set lead going into the break.
U of L stayed close in the third set tying at 15 and forcing a Notre Dame timeout. The teams traded points with another tie coming at 22. Serinity Phillips had a kill for match point and an ace by Megan Dunne gave Notre Dame the match 25-23.
U of L returns to action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Blue Demons of DePaul visit.
