
Volleyball Hexes Hoyas 3-0 in Halloween-Themed Match

Jana Matiasovska had 12 kills and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 win over visiting Georgetown at Hoops in a Halloween-themed night.
The Cardinals improve to 11-10 and 7-3 in the league. Georgetown falls to 12-10 and 5-4 in the BIG EAST. U of L outblocked the Hoyas 13-5 and outhit them .303 to .117. Rui Liu had five blocks and five digs and Gwen Rucker had eight kills and a block. Justin Landi had eight kills, 22 assists, two aces and four blocks. GU was led by Jessica Hardy's 12 kills.
"Our crowd was great tonight, I love our fans. Their enthusiasm and funny costumes made for a great atmosphere," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "Back to volleyball, we still have to work a little on our mental game, and not give away any points. We had a couple of lulls but adjusted quickly when they made a little run at us."
The Cardinals used an 8-0 run in the first set to go up 20-11 and used .303 hitting to keep the Hoyas at bay. Georgetown made a run with six straight of its own to come back within four at 22-18 but the could get no closer. Two straight kills by Jana Matiasovska and an ace by Justine Landi gave the game to the Cards 25-18. U of L had four blocks and Landi had four kills to lead the Cardinals.
In the second set, after being down by one at 9-8, U of L had a 6-0 run to go up 15-10. Using .429 hitting, the Cardinals continued to pull away and Georgetown ran out of timeouts trying to cool the hot hitting hand of Lecia Brown who had 3 kills and Rui Liu who had three blocks in the second set.
The third set was close as Georgetown scrambled to keep up with the Cardinals, coming to within two at 19-17. The Cardinals buckled down and scored the last six points, sparked by two straight kills by freshman Gwen Rucker.
Almost 1,100 fans saw the Cardinals win and participate in a costume contest. U of L is back in action Sunday at Cardinal Arena when BIG EAST rival South Florida visits. The game, which will be broadcast live by ESPNU, is at 2 p.m.
