Junior Lecia Brown had 10 block assists and four kills. SHU was led by Sarah Osmun, who tallied 17 kills and nine digs.
"If we didn't have second set I would say it was a great, great day, but the loss in the second shows that we still have a ways to go in learning how to stay focused and play every single play to the end," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "But everyday we get better than the day before and hopefully we are peaking at the right time."
In the first game U of L was powered to a 25-10 win behind the hot hitting hand of Tatyana Kolesnikova, who had seven kills and helped the Cardinals to a .625 hitting percentage. U of L had 6 blocks. The 14-1 run early in the set sealed the Pirates' doom.
In the second set, the score see-sawed back and forth with 13 ties and six lead changes. Tied at 20, SHU scored on a pair of kills and an error by Matiasovska to get to set point at 21-24. The Cardinals scored on a kill by Matiasovska and an ace by Justine Landi to stave off set point. But a kill by Sarah Osmun put the Cards away 25-23. SHU hit .282 in that set and were led by Osmun's seven kills.
In the third set, the Pirates' hitting deserted them as the Cardinals roared back for the 25-13 win. Seton Hall nit -.125 to U of L's .357. The Cardinals built an eight point lead at 16-8 and never looked back. Landi had four kills to lead the Cards.
In the fourth set, U of L powered out to a 15-6 lead and forced a Seton Hall timeout but the Cardinals continued to build their lead. U of L cruised easily to the 25-12 win.
