Jana Matiasovska had 21 kills, four aces, eight digs and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Tennessee Tech to win the Louisville Marriott East Invitational Saturday night at Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 3-0 with the 25-30, 30-22, 32-30, 30-19 win over Tech. The Eagles drop to 2-1. Matiasovska, freshman libero Lindsey Mango and Svetlana Dukule earned all-tournament honors with Matisovska being named most valuable player. For Tech, Louisville native Leah Meffert and Caitlin Bullock along with Memphis' Laura Cote and Coastal Carolina's Megan Bickford rounding out the all-tournament team.
U of L hit .314 to TTU's .236 and outblocked the Eagles 11-9. Lecia Brown had six blocks with Rui Liu adding five. U of L notched ten service aces led by Matiasovska's match-high four. Meffert had 20 kills to lead the Eagles, with Caitlin Bullock adding nine kills.
TTU used an 8-2 run in the first game to go up 24-15 and even though U of L outscored the Eagles 9-6 down the stretch, it came too late as Tec surged to the 30-25 win. After falling behind 7-3 in the second game, the Cardinals put together a 10-2 run to go up 13-9 and never trailed again. U of L hit .429, led by Matiasovska six kills.
U of L had trouble pulling away from the Eagles in the third game. After tying at 18, U of L pulled ahead 27-25 and TTU had used both its timeouts. Down five, Tech scored six straight points to get to game point. U of L scored three straight to get to game point but Tech came back to tie at 30. Two straight Justine Landi kills gave U of L the game at 32-30.
In the fourth game, U of L used a 10-2 run to go up 25-17 and then cruised to the 30-19 win.
